November 30, 2019

We spent the last two days of November in Anza Borrego State Park. With over 600,000 acres, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is the largest state park in California. 500 miles of dirt roads, 12 wilderness areas and miles of hiking trails provide visitors with an unparalleled opportunity to experience the wonders of the Colorado Desert.

The top thing to do in this park is hike, but we weren't there long enough to experience very much. Michel did walk to the top of what is known as Ghost Mountain. 3,215 ft above sea level sits the remnants of an abandoned homestead built in the 30's and 40's by author Marshall South. Here he and his wife raised 3 children. He described the hilltop as the "Roof of the World". Not much remains up there, but it is easy to see that life wasn't easy for him or his family.

Desert Palm trees and rocks everywhere on the flats.

Into Borrego Springs for dinner and an up close look at the sculptors that are scattered everywhere in the desert in the area surrounding Borrego Springs.
The creator of this whimsical collection, spread out on three square miles of non-contiguous desert land surrounding Borrego Springs, is Ricardo Breceda, a gifted artist who ten years ago never knew that one day he would have the talent and skill to build these remarkable sculptures.
