January 3, 2016

January 1st was the longest day EVER!!
After little sleep the night before, we headed to Vegas for our 10:30 PM flight to Panama. We left by 8 am and arrived in Pahrump, Nevada around 1:00. Pahrump is where we are leaving our cars. Thank you so very much Theresa (and Curt) Perry for this and also for driving us to airport..... Got to the airport (after a nice visit and dinner in Pahrump) at 7:30 PM. But the plane left on time and 6.5 hours later we arrived at our destination.... 8:05 in the morning and it was already HOT!!  Not complaining - but because we were so early our rooms were not ready and we had to go 'hang out' until after lunch. We hopped a bus and toured around a little.  We look dog tired in this photo and that is because we were ....... early night.

Busy today, but after a good night's sleep we were all ready and raring to go.  We left this morning around 10 am and returned about 4:30.

First stop of the day was Panama Viejo. Founded in 1519, it is the remaining part of the old Panama City and former capital of the country.

For Panamanians these  "Old Panama" ruins and it's cathedral belfry are among their countrys' proud visual symbols.

Lunch at Balboa Yacht Club......

with Michal, our tour guide for the day.
After lunch we drove up to a view point overlooking Panama City. I can't for the life of me remember the name of this place, but we had to climb many steps to get there.

It was worth it....spectacular!

Last but not least, we visited the Canal, Panama's largest tourist attraction.

Here we watched a ship pass through the Miraflores Locks.

We went through the Canal ourselves a few years back (2009) on a cruise ship. I definitely think the view was better the first time!!

Well that was our first day in Panama City.... check back soon - tomorrow we are going to the Metropolitan National Park then off to "Old Town" Panama City.....
